From the Principal

Stanmore Public School Principal's Message

Dear parents and carers,

This week, teachers finished writing Semester 1 reports, summarising the learning progress of our students. Supervisors are currently reading the reports to ensure consistency, and after that I will sign them and read a sample selection from each class, prior to sending them home in Week 10.

Please be aware that due to the uniquely disrupted nature of this school year, Semester 1 reports are significantly modified from their usual format. There are no grades for achievement or effort in these reports. In some cases, comment banks have been co-written by groups of teachers, so comments may be more generic and similar to other students’ than usual.

Thank you to teachers and supervisors for their efforts in preparing students reports in a short time frame, and with less assessment data than usual.

Birthday treats reminder

To help us support necessary hygiene practices, please avoid sending homemade treats or cakes for birthday celebrations for the time being. Pre-wrapped treats or cakes are recommended instead.

Update – plans for Performing Arts Showcase 2020

We are planning to proceed with staging Performing Arts Showcase Concerts this year, but due to the pandemic it will be different to previous years.

  • The Showcase performances will be held in November, rather than in September. Dates to be advised.
  • It is unlikely that we will be able to perform at the Enmore Theatre due to social distancing guidelines. The Showcase will probably be staged as a series of twilight concerts, on temporary staging under the COLA or in the playground, pending social distancing guidelines at that time.
  • The rehearsal and production of class items will be led and managed by our Drama teacher Ms Lopes and Music teacher Ms Poon, in their weekly classes. Class teachers are not expected to devote teaching time to creating or rehearsing Showcase items, although some additional rehearsals may be needed immediately prior to performances. This will ensure teachers and students maintain a strong focus on core teaching and learning programs throughout Term 3 and into Term 4.
  • Due to restrictions to parent access to school grounds and classrooms, we will not be inviting parent helpers to assist with preparations. Wherever possible, we will use our extensive wardrobe of existing costumes, and make Showcase a more sustainable event.

As a result, the 2020 Showcase Concerts may be less spectacular than in previous years, although it will still no doubt be an impressive primary school production. The important thing is that students will experience planning, rehearsing and performing a show piece; and hopefully the school community will have the opportunity to watch them.

Co-curricular activities

Over the past week, several co-curricular activities have resumed, and this will continue in line with the revised guidelines shared in last Friday’s newsletter. We are planning for private music tuition to resume in classrooms from next week – tutors will be in contact with families directly to communicate procedures.

Please remember that there is an expectation that parents will continue to remain off school grounds when dropping off and collecting children from extra-curricular activities where possible. If you need more information about different programs or associated procedures, please contact external providers directly.

Calling all new enrolments!

We are working on innovative strategies to provide information for new families in 2021.

We are planning a New Enrolments Live Stream Information Night on Tuesday 28 July at 6:00pm – flyer and link coming soon!

If you know other families considering enrolling their child at Stanmore PS, please let them know about this date, and encourage them to make contact with the school office or check the website to access more information about enrolling at the school.

P&C Meeting next Tuesday

The P&C Committee will meet on Tuesday evening over Zoom at 7pm. Items on the agenda include plans for improvements in the school’s Kitchen Garden, the management of the canteen, and social events for the rest of 2020. See the P&C section of the newsletter for more information.

Year 4 students seeking placement in an OC Class for Year 5 in 2021 are reminded to submit online application forms by the deadline of Friday 26 June. Visit Opportunity classes – Year 5 Updates.
